When we first built our holiday home in Spartia, Kefalonia, back in 2010, one of the hardest decisions we faced was finding the perfect name. It couldn’t just be any name—it had to capture the spirit of the villa and the beautiful island we fell in love with.

We thought about naming it after a famous beach, a tree, or something traditionally Greek, but that didn’t feel right. We wanted something that connected on a deeper level, something that reflected not just the place but the feeling we had when we decided to make Kefalonia our home away from home.

When our villa was finally completed, we found ourselves facing an important decision: what to call it. We wanted a name that reflected the beauty of Kefalonia, but also one that felt truly personal. Something timeless, not just another “Villa Sunshine” or “Seaview Retreat.”

As we explored ideas, we came across an interesting word in Greek—Amari. Some say that in ancient times, the Greeks considered “amari” (singular: amaros’) a symbol of eternal beauty and life. In Homer’s Odyssey, the amari flowers were referred to as the “flowers of the underworld,” a symbol of something everlasting. The word itself is linked to the verb “amairo,” which means “to delight in.”

But what sealed the decision for us was the discovery that in our language, Gujarati, “Amari” means “ours.” It felt like fate. Here was a word that tied together both the Greek meaning of eternal beauty and our personal connection to the villa as something that belonged to us—a home we could share with others, but also one that would always be “ours.”
